Zhiyi was awarded a URECA Fellowship to continue her work on sulfinamide synthesis this summer! Great job.
Julia and Hannah presented posters at North/Central North Carolina American Chemical Society’s 24th Annual Poster Vendor Night held in Greensboro. So nice to see them recognized for their work and see the photos.
Amaya and Simon both presented posters for BMB Research Day at Wake Downtown. A really great research showcase! Congratulations to both for completing this.

Dr. King visited the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla California and his post-doctoral mentor, K. Barry Sharpless. He was with his son Dylan, a PhD student in math at Caltech. Great to see Barry and that he is still thinking outside the box!

- Yang Liu defends his PhD thesis and is now Dr. Liu! Great job, Yang. Yang returned to work in China.

- Parker and Yang present posters at the Center for Redox Biology and Medicine Retreat at Wake Forest University.
- Parker and Yang present posters at the International Society of Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine meeting in Washington, DC.
- Parker defends his dependent proposal! Congratulations.
- King group has a paper published in Redox Biology! The paper ” Differential Reactivity of Bacillithiol, Mycothiol and Glutathione with Nitroxyl (HNO): Structural Determinants and Potential Biological Implications” can be found here ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.redox.2025.103915). This paper highlights Jade, Yang, and Parker’s work. Great job, everyone.

- Dr. King steps down as CHM Chair after 6 years and begins a one-year research leave. Writing papers and a proposal are big things on the agenda!

- Yang Z. also received the John W. Nowell Award in chemistry that recognizes his academic and research work. Yang received the ACS Award in Analytical Chemistry too.
- Jose was awarded a WFU URECA fellowship to continue working in the lab this summer.
- Julia is working this summer between the King and Dos Santos labs and is supported by a Stamps scholarship.

- Alyssa and Yang Z. both wrote and defended honors theses in BMB and CHM, respectively. Yang won the Noftle award for the best CHM honors thesis.

- Yang Z. accepts offer to graduate school from Yale University. Way to go, Yang!
- Yang Z selected to represent WFU at the ACC’s Meeting of the Minds Undergraduate Research conference at the University of Pittsburgh.

- Amaya Williams and Jose Policarpio joined the group! Jose is working on the synthesis of non-glutathione low molecular weight thiol ergothioneine. Amaya is working on learning more about the basic chemistry of the sulfinamide functional group in an effort to develop a label for their cellular detection.
- Ana goes to Copenhagen for semester abroad.
October 2023:
- Jade (talk), Yang (poster) and Maggie (poster) presented at SERMACS in Durham on their Summer 2023 work.
- Alberto accepted a position at SCN Bestco as the Chemistry and Microbiology QC Manager! We wish you the best and will miss your steady guidance.
September 2023:
- Ana Bilbao and Megan Faust join the group and Adrianna Riera returns from her Public Health-Americorps summer experience. Ana, Megan and Adrianna are the phosphine/ligation team! Alyssa Zaepfel will officially join in the Spring. First-year graduate student Holden Hankerson is doing a rotation and Sydney Williams is handling the website.
- Jade will present a poster on her 2023 summer work at the URECA Research Day.
- Dr. King will give a talk at the NIH sponsored conference “Redox and Metabolism in Inflammation and Disease.”
July 2023:
- Dr. King was awarded a three-year NIH R15 grant entitled “Chemical Biology of Nitroxyl (HNO) in Bacillus Subtilis.”
- Jade and Yang brave the New River in West Virginia and survive!
June 2023:
- Sid Lohano, Maggie Mahanes (Guilford College) and Yang Zeng joined the group for the Summer of 2023.
- The Flash Grant “Development of Antibiotic Boosters as new therapies” written by Alberto was awarded for $27,500.
May 2023:
- Alyssa Suhocki and Christian Barnard presented and defend CHM Honor’s theses.
- Alyssa Suhocki won the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry.
- Alyssa accepted a position in graduate school in chemistry at NC State.
- Christian Barnard won the Grant Madison Backerman/American Institutes of Chemistry Award. Christian accepted a position in graduate school in medicinal chemistry at the University of Florida.
- Alberto Negrellos won the American Institutes of Chemistry Award for Outstanding Post-Doctoral.
- Abby won a summer internship position at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Rockville, MD.
April 2023:
- Abby Davis was awarded the Joe and Sue Newhall Scholarship.
